In the centre of the Museum Quarter, with views over the Hofvijver, lies this ca. 25,000 m2 complex with entrances on the Korte Vijverberg, the Tournooiveld, Lange Houtstraat and Doelenstraat. The premises of, among others, the former Staalbankiers is currently a monofunctional office building with limited activity in the evening or at the weekend. The property is largely vacant and existing facilities (fitness centre, swimming pool, squash court) have fallen into disuse. SENS and Syntrus Achmea are searching together for a future-proof design and function for the property which will enable it to be of real added value to the city centre.
The property occupies a very prominent position in the historical heart of The Hague. Situated between the political heart of the Netherlands, the cultural cluster of the Museum Quarter and the Plein as an entertainment area. The property is to gain a more active embedding in its immediate surroundings, leading to more dynamism and growth in visitor numbers in the Museum Quarter. SENS wants to open the building outwards, making use of its function as a link between the Binnenhof and the Lange Voorhout. SENS is convinced that the addition of office-complementary facilities such as co-working, a hotel and apartments in this location will result in a healthy environment for those working, visiting and living here. SENS and Syntrus Achmea have made it their shared aim to give this prominent piece of the city meaning once more.
Smart programming of the series of interconnected properties will generate vibrancy and activity. Harmony between working, visiting and living are the ingredients needed for a sustainable, future-proof programme. An inner garden which is open to the public and a platform for culture, politics and debate will attract visitors to this place. Residents, entrepreneurs, politicians and tourists can meet each other here. The sustainability ambition for the whole building and its various functions will enhance the mental and physical health of the users (WELL). STAAL will become the icon of the vibrant city.
